This album is a collection of songs that have caught my attention over the years. My hope is that there are at least a few that you are glad I noticed.

Wasted Late Night, by Kim Coughlin and Sam Enriquez
If you stay in a relationship for any length of time, there are definitely nights like these. Kim is a talented singer/songwriter and a friend of mine.

The Ballad of Easy Rider, by Roger McGuinn
According to the liner notes in the rerelease of the Easy Rider soundtrack, Dylan scribbled these words down and handed them off for McGuinn to write the melody. When I heard Sandy Denny sing “Let your waters wash down …”, I knew the song was for me.

Summerfly, by Cheryl Wheeler
“Who’s your partner, who’s your darlin’, who’s your baby now? Who wakes up at night to pull you in?”

Yas Yas Yas, trad., arr. by Dave Van Ronk
I love Dave Van Ronk’s lilting syncopation of this children’s playground song.

Pleasant Street, by Tim Buckley
Tim Buckley (Jeff’s father) was a handsome, winsome young man in the 60’s with so much talent. I wanted to present this tune just like he did---pained, honest, hopeless.

On the Road Again, by Bob Dylan
A small fun treasure buried in Bob Dylan’s jewel chest.

Crazy Baby, by Joan Osborne
There may be reasons for someone to give up, and this song acknowledges that there are, but at the same time the song is a beautiful plea to hold on.

I Still Miss Someone, by Johnnie Cash & Johnnie Cash Jr.
I had a first love with blue eyes, and those feelings of love followed me and follow me still.

Rain, by Terence Trent D’Arby
The beat and the chorus knock me out.

In the Pines, by Huddie Ledbetter (Leadbelly), arr. by Ava Wynne
I drew on Dave Van Ronk’s version of this song, modifying the lyrics slightly. Leadbelly wrote a novel in a song.

Hey Baby, by Derek St. Holmes
Just a rockin’ good tune.

When I Was a Cowboy, by Huddie Ledbetter (Leadbelly)
Ian & Sylvia’s version of this song is the only one I know. Besides being drenched in sarcasm, the melody sticks around.

A Hard Rain’s A Gonna Fall, by Bob Dylan
I have always appreciated the beauty, layers and density of Bob Dylan’s poetry and melodies. In this song, I am struck by the juxtaposition of images and the strength of the last verse.

Hymn to Her, by Meg Keene
Alzheimer’s disease claimed both of my parents. When I heard Chrissie Hynde sing this song, the pain of it all came spilling out. While I was learning it, a few weeks went by before I was able to sing it without breaking down. Breaking down is a good thing.
